The BPMN specification rules that an arrow on an association is optional, but may be added if a direction of flow is appropriate. For example, a unidirectional arrow would not be appropriate to show read/write interactions with a Data Store. Figure 10.68 of the standard shows another example. The sidebar in BizAgi shows an association without arrows, but when this is used in a diagram an arrow is automatically added to one end. According to the standard, this should be optional.
