Alternative to using a gateway to merge and split at the same time

I'm getting a validation error when I have a gateway that both merges and splits (see pic attached). This used to be fine but the error started popping up ever since I upgraded to the most recent version. How do I resolve this in my process map?

Dear Mary,

Do not use gateways to join and split at the same time.
Balance gateways. Splits must be joined equivalently.
