Case Numbering - How to know previous case number?

Hi Team,

Currently I have a case number - T - YYYYMMDD000 - B

I have few questions: This 000 in above format is a three - digit sequence, is it possible to reset it on a daily basis. So every day this sequence starts with 001?

i have an idea already for this I need to know Where can I get the last case number from, if I can get the last case number created and check the date, and if its date + 1 then I can reset the sequence.

Is it possible to overwrite the case number with a new number:

For eg: Case number created is T-20160721005-B, In case on first screen user gives an old number T-20160405006-B, can I rename the new case number from T-20160721005-B to T-20160405006-001-B, this is just to show that the new case is a branch of old case mentioned by the user.
